When it comes time to design your deck, you want to make sure everything is perfect before committing to anything and you don’t want to have to pay someone to design it for you if you can avoid it. Deck design software can be a great solution because it allows you to easily view what your deck will look like when it’s complete, and you won’t be wasting any time drawing it out, only to have to start over if you don’t like it.

Nowadays we don’t have to worry about paying a fortune for deck design software because there are great resources out there for free. You can access these within a matter of minutes, and you’ll be well on your way to designing the deck of your dreams!

Although there is some great paid software out there for deck design, we’re just going to focus on the free ones for this blog.

Aztek Deck Designer

Okay, we’re starting the list off with a bang! Aztek Deck Designer is probably one of the best pieces of software out there for deck design. It’s detailed, simple, and allows you to change designs really fast! Aztek allows you to design your deck directly from your browser and fully renders it in 3d to give you a great idea of what you’ll be getting. To get started, all you need to do is sign up on their website.

No need to worry about microtransactions or constantly getting bugged to upgrade versions. This software is designed to bring in clients for their deck installation services.

SketchUp is a software that brands itself on being a detailed 3D design software for beginners who don’t have the time or the resources to start everything from scratch. The free version is very robust, but you can upgrade to the paid version if you feel like it’s lacking in features. This software certainly doesn’t give you as much of a detailed view of your deck as Aztek Deck Designer, but the functionality is most certainly there. This isn’t just for decks either. You can design pretty much anything you can think of with this one!

If you decide to upgrade to the paid version, you’ll have more features like LayOut. This will turn your model into a drawing set, add model views, allow you to choose drawing scales, change line weights, and add graphics.

Trex Deck Design Software

Trex Deck Designer is great if you want to make a quick deck design on-the-go on your mobile device. Like Aztek, you’ll be getting a detailed view of your deck, just without all the features that you’ll get from SketchUp.

Lowe’s Deck Designer

This designer is another Java-run software. Unfortunately, it only runs in Internet Explorer, Safari and Firefox, so if you’re like most people and only use Chrome, this isn’t really an option. This is disappointing coming from such a well-known home improvement company.

Decks.com Deck Designer

Decks.com is a pretty robust platform that can hold its ground against Aztek and SketchUp. It has most of the features that the others do and even helps you plan to get a permit for your deck.

Big Hammer

Like Lowe’s designer, Big Hammer is limited as far as compatible browsers, only this time it only works with Internet Explorer. This is unfortunate, but if you’re willing to be patient with it, this can be some really great software. Big Hammer offers over 70 deck templates, various construction methods, deck materials, stair options, railings; in addition to 3D, plan, post layout, and dimensioned views. Like Decks.com, this one will help you make a materials list and design to submit to the government for your permit.

That will do it for the free design software you’ll have available to you. There are a few other free options out there, but these are the best of the best. Try each one and determine which can help you in your circumstances, and have fun!
