If you’re like the rest of us, you love the sleek and stylish design of modern homes, but you don’t want to redesign your entire interior just to get that feeling. That’s okay because you can give your deck a modern look just by choosing the right materials! With so many great options out there nowadays for your deck, the possibilities have no limits. if you dream it, you can build it, and that’s why we’re here to help your dreams become a reality.

We’re going to go over a couple materials that will give you that modern look without having to worry whether it will be reliable.

Tropical Hardwoods

This is the material that every deck builder wants in their backyard. It’s very dense and durable, has a great rustic color to it, and lasts about 25 years. The downside is that this wood is very expensive and will take a lot more effort to maintain than say, composite material.

Tropical hardwoods are infamous for how difficult they are to transport, as well as being nearly impossible to drive a nail through without first creating a pilot hole. If you’re willing to commit to the time and effort it takes to install and maintain these woods, try looking for ipe, tigerwood, massaranduba, or cumaru. These woods usually require side mounted fastener clips and will add to your total cost. However, at the end of the day, you’ll have a beautiful modern looking wood that accepts stains well.

Redwood and Cedar

Like tropical hardwoods, redwood and cedar contain tannins that make them highly resistant to rot, decay, and insects. There are many decking experts out there who use only redwood and cedar due to its reliability and natural look. The downside to redwood and cedar is that they typically cost around three times as much as pressure-treated lumber and tend to lose their color after a couple years unless treated properly.

If you decide to go with redwood, you’ll have a beautiful, natural looking wood. Although it’s less durable and a bit more pricey than hardwoods like ipe, it’s much easier to work with.

Pressure-Treated Lumber

Pressure-treated lumber is easily the most cost-effective and readily available material for your deck, but that doesn’t necessarily make it best for making your deck modern looking. Unlike hardwoods, redwood, and cedar, pressure-treated lumber is chemically treated to resist rot and fungus. In addition, it’s typically only 90 cents per linear foot for a 2 x 6, meaning you’ll be saving a lot of money over other options, especially hardwoods like ipe.

Composite

Composite decking material sometimes has a bad reputation in the decking business because it’s not “authentic”. Similar to pressure-treated lumber, composite is very popular and readily available due to how it’s produced. Composite decking material is made-up of wood particles, such as sawdust, wood chips, and wood fiber pieces, as well as recycled plastic. This makes composite decking environmentally friendly.

Composite materials are usually great for making a modern looking desk because of how versatile they can be. If you want to experiment more with the color and shape of your deck, or just mimic the look of other woods, this will be your best option.
